Diazepam for Fear of Flying

Based on current guidelines, doctors at Millrise Medical Practice have decided not to prescribe Diazepam for patients seeking it to manage a fear of flying before travel for the following reasons:

  1. Limited medical use: Diazepam is prescribed for specific medical conditions but is not approved for preventive use in non-medical situations. Prescribing it for a fear of flying goes against national guidelines (NICE) . Benzodiazepines such as Diazepam and other sedative drugs are no longer recommended for treatment of phobias because other treatments are safer and more effective.
  2. Impaired concentration and safety risks: As a sedative, Diazepam can impair your ability to concentrate and may cause drowsiness during the flight. This increases the risk of injury, especially in emergency situations, compromising both your safety and the safety of others around you.
  3. Potential mood disturbances: Some individuals taking Diazepam may experience mood changes, leading to behavior that is out of character. This can put your personal safety, and the safety of other passengers.
  4. Legal issues in other countries: In many countries, Diazepam and similar medications are illegal. If you are found in possession of them, you risk having the medication confiscated or facing legal consequences.
  5. Long-lasting effects: Diazepam has a long half-life, meaning it remains in your system for an extended period. This can result in failing random drug tests, which could be problematic for individuals in professions that require such testing.

Please note flight anxiety does not come under the remit of General Medical Services as defined in the GP contract and so we are not obliged to prescribe for this.

We understand that a fear of flying can be distressing, but there are more effective ways to manage this issue. We recommend enrolling in a Fear of Flying Course, which can provide you with better tools and strategies for overcoming your fear.
