International Day of Sign Language

13.09.2024

Every year 23rd September holds the annual day held to recognise the Internal day of Sign Language. The day was chosen to link in with the World Federation of the Dear which was launched in 1951.

Each year celebrates a different theme. The themes are a good way of expanding your knowledge and to help you learn the different ways you can observe the date and include yourself in the awareness.

The most obvious and best way is to observe this day is to learn sign language. There are numerous guides online that you can find to learn basic sign language or to sign up to sign language courses.

Please see below a 15 minutes video which will teach you basic sign languages to encourage learning more.

People often mistake that sign language is a form of language and not just a form signing. Each Country has their own sign language – their own physical and visible language. Globally their are over 72 million deaf people who rely on their sign language.

Facts;

  • Sign language is the 4th most used language in the UK
  • It is more than just hand gestures
  • It isn’t as difficult as you think
  • Each Country has their own version
  • Some people rely totally on sign language

If you rely on sign language for your appointments, alerts can be added to give you additional time during your appointment to ensure your consultation with the clinician is just as thorough as those who are verbal.
